U.S. Embassy - Moscow, Russia

The U.S. Embassy in Moscow, Russia was built in 2000 and is located in the Presnensky District of the city, across the street from the Russian White House and near the Zoo. In 2003 the State Department broke ground on an annex, which was designed by Bill Hellmuth of HOK. It officially opened in 2018.

Artist Commission

Don Gummer

In 2014 FAPE commissioned Don Gummer to create a sculpture for the U.S. Embassy in Moscow. The artist traveled to Moscow on several occasions to visit the embassy and to study Russian art and culture in order to better inform his work. On a train ride from Moscow to St. Petersburg in July 2014, Gummer sketched and reflected on his time in Russia. Those drawings were realized in the model Gummer presented to Secretary of State John Kerry at FAPE’s State Department dinner on Monday, April 20, 2015.

Gummer’s sculpture is a 22-foot-high stainless steel and bronze sculpture that soars from the arrival courtyard, above security walls, and is visible to the citizens of Moscow. The work was fabricated in New York at Polich Tallix.

Frontier was officially dedicated at a ceremony with Ambassador Jon Huntsman on June 8, 2018. Thanks to the public affairs section at the embassy, there was also an artist's talk at the Moscow American Center.

Gift of the artist with additional funding provided by Agnes Gund, The Honorable Ronald S. Lauder and Mrs. Jo Carole Lauder, Nancy and Howard Marks, Maria Hummer-Tuttle and Robert Tuttle and
My work for Moscow expresses the openness and optimism of America. Frontier represents our multicultural energy, while remaining solid and well grounded. It reflects both the individuality and interconnectedness of our countries. It is an honor to share my work with the Russian community, and I appreciate FAPE’s dedication to the project.
