U.S. Embassy - Hanoi, Vietnam

The State Department is currently constructing a new U.S. Embassy in Hanoi, Vietnam. The architect is EYP a Page Company and the new compound is uniquely situated on an active urban boulevard. The campus connects the bustling city with the tranquility of the adjacent Cau Giay Park. Inspired by Ha Long Bay in northeast Vietnam, known for its shimmering waters and thousands of towering limestone islands, the building’s materials portray America’s forward-looking, reflective and transparent approach to diplomacy.

Frank Stella

Frank Stella agreed to create a sculpture for the new U.S. Embassy in Hanoi in 2021. The sculpture consists of two conjoined, multi-pointed stars made of aluminum and stands more than 20 feet tall. It will be prominently located near the entrance of the building in the amphitheater. Installation will take place in 2029.

Among the myriad of forms found in the artist’s work, the star is an element that continuously reappears. It is simultaneously abstract and figurative and immediately identifiable. The star stands out amidst the tangle of invented abstractions which the artist has long explored. Stella’s sculpture pays tribute to the star found in the Vietnamese flag.

Gift of the artist with additional funding provided by Agnes Gund, The Honorable Ronald S. Lauder and Mrs. Jo Carole Lauder, Nancy and Howard Marks, Maria Hummer-Tuttle and Robert Tuttle and
The stacked stars represent a cascade of light, with the hope of continuing peace.

Avis Robinson

In 2023 FAPE commissioned Avis Robinson to create a series of eight vibrant, geometric quilts for each elevator bank at the new U.S. Embassy in Hanoi, Vietnam. The artist brought a depth of craft and artistry to her work. Early in her career with the Environmental Protection Agency, she spent a good deal of time in Vietnam and understood the country’s cultural traditions, which she honored in her work. At FAPE’s 2023 State Department Dinner, we presented Secretary of State Antony Blinken the watercolors of the quilts Avis designed on October, 23.

Sadly, on October 28, 2023, Avis passed away. We were honored she was able to complete the watercolors. She subsequently granted her husband permission to finish the project. For more information, please click here.
