Restoration
In 1991 FAPE collaborated with the U.S. Ambassador to Belgium, Bruce Gelb, to fund the conservation and restoration of an 18th-century Chinese Coramandel lacquered screen at the Ambassador’s Residence. The front side of the screen depicts palace life in a series of 12 panels: floral landscapes, terraced residences, tigers and dragons, warriors in procession, dancers performing and a mother singing lullabies. On the reverse, a narrative on silk explains the given scenes. Time and temperature, however, had taken their toll and had caused the surface to crack and scale. Atelier ConservArt was hired to restore the screen to its original splendor.
