William Wegman

American, 1943

Wegman is best known for his photographs featuring staged compositions of his Weimaraners. Since the 1970s the popularity of these photographic works has risen as the artist has continued to work in painting, video and film.

Wegman received a B.F.A. in painting from the Massachusetts College of Art, Boston in 1965, and an M.F.A. in painting from the University of Illinois, Champagne-Urbana in 1967. The artist has been awarded numerous honors and fellowships, including the Guggenheim Fellowship, the National Endowment for the Arts and the New York Foundation for the Arts Honor, among others. Additionally, his work has been broadcast on programs including Sesame Street and Saturday Night Live, and film work screened at the Sundance Film Festival. Wegman’s work is included in public collections in the U.S. and internationally, including the Brooklyn Museum, The Museum of Modern Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art, all in New York City; the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; de Menil Collection, Houston; and the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis. Wegman lives and works in New York City, and Maine.

After much thought, I came up with this View Points photo work for the FAPE print. It seemed to have the right spirit. It is both literally and figuratively reflective. And it looks like a flag. Penny was one of my favorite models. She posed effortlessly as though she was born to it. She was.
