During this period, Blumrich discovered the batik process and created colorful and intricate works using this technique. Blumrich participated in numerous arts and crafts shows, exhibited in solo and group exhibitions, and received various awards for his work. In 1975 the Smithsonian American Art Museum acquired three of his puppets. In 1977 Blumrich became a founding member of the Surface Design Association, which was created to promote awareness and appreciation of textile-inspired art and design through publications, exhibitions and conferences.
Later, Blumrich and his family moved to a sheep farm in Oregon, then to Tennessee, where he continued to work as an artist and disc jockey. In 1982 Stephen and Terry Blumrich founded Pea Ridge Purdies, a folk art workshop for making quilts and dolls. This business lasted 20 years and took wholesale orders from Pottery Barn and Macy’s.
