Ryan Gobuty
American, 1979
Ryan Gobuty is a Los Angeles based photographer with over 16 years of professional experience. Gobuty worked for nearly two decades at Gensler, the world’s largest architecture firm, where he started as an architect before transitioning into the role as photography manager. During his tenure, he produced over 20,000 finished photographs, illuminating a broad spectrum of projects, including numerous award-winners designed by an array of Design Principals.
Gobuty brings to his work a deep understanding of architecture—he graduated with an architectural degree from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo—in addition to his technical proficiency. His approach to creating emotion through storytelling is at the core of every image made. Themes of purpose, beauty, precision, and depth are evident. By expressing these concepts, he conveys a greater message to the viewer. A photograph is not meant to represent reality or to document space; instead, it is evocative of a feeling, an emotion, a quality that is experienced in that space. Viewers feel the building’s presence.
Inspired by his desire to help other photographers better express their own visual language, he taught architectural photography at the Rocky Mountain School of Photography and assisted the renowned Nick Merrick of Hall+Merrick Photographers at the Santa Fe Photography Workshops.
His work has been honored by the American Institute of Architects Los Angeles in its Architectural Photography Awards, which recognize artistic interpretation of the built environment in addition to a photo’s documentary components.
