In 1972 Benson was commissioned by Leslie George Katz of Eakins Press to photograph The Memorial to Robert Gould Shaw and the Massachusetts 54th Regiment for a book project. It is thought by many to be America’s greatest civic monument, a powerful piece of sculpture that expresses the ultimate unity of black and white America. Shaw, a Boston blueblood, answered the call to arms in the Civil War and was placed in charge of Massachusetts’ black regiment.
