Richard Benson

American, 1943–2017

  • In 1972 Benson was commissioned by Leslie George Katz of Eakins Press to photograph The Memorial to Robert Gould Shaw and the Massachusetts 54th Regiment for a book project. It is thought by many to be America’s greatest civic monument, a powerful piece of sculpture that expresses the ultimate unity of black and white America. Shaw, a Boston blueblood, answered the call to arms in the Civil War and was placed in charge of Massachusetts’ black regiment.

The prints stand as a record of tough times long past, while the Shaw Memorial now gleams in its restored state, standing proudly alongside the Common. It is hard to walk by it today without thinking about the great moment it celebrates.
