Maya Lin

American, 1959

Lin is a renowned modernist and architectural designer, best known for the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. Born in Athens, Ohio, Lin has been influenced by the topography of southeastern Ohio, as well as the earth artists of the 1960s and 1970s, drawing on inspiration for her work from her profound respect for the natural environment. She is the recipient of numerous awards and honors, and has been the subject of solo exhibitions at museums and galleries worldwide, with works in the permanent collections of the National Gallery of Art and the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C.; The Metropolitan Museum of Art and The Museum of Modern Art in New York City; The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City, Missouri; the Nevada Museum of Art; Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, Arkansas; and the California Academy of Sciences.
