Lynda Benglis

American, 1941

Throughout her nearly 50-year career, Lynda Benglis has shown herself to be a consummate master of form and flow. Responding in part to the rigid gray, black and white strictures of the male-dominated minimalist movement, Benglis’ colorful, charged, highly visceral sensibility erupted in the late-1960s art world, merging movements from Abstract Expressionism to color stains to Pop Art. Celebrated for her three-dimensional sculpture, Benglis’ work extends into video, photography and even media. Benglis was born in Louisiana and currently resides in both New York City and Santa Fe, New Mexico. Her work has been exhibited throughout the world, including the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; the New Museum of Contemporary Art, The Museum of Modern Art, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and the Whitney Museum of American Art, all in New York City; and the Irish Museum of Modern Art in Dublin.
