Louise Bourgeois

American, born France, 1911–2010

Bourgeois was an internationally acclaimed artist who was born in Paris and emigrated to the United States in 1938. She is best known for her contributions to both modern and contemporary art, and for her spider sculptures. In 1973, Bourgeois began teaching at Pratt Institute, The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art, and the New York Studio School of Drawing, Painting and Sculpture. She received her first retrospective in 1982 at The Museum of Modern Art in New York City. Her work is in the collections of major museums around the world, and in 1993 she represented the United States at the Venice Biennale.
