Dorothea Rockburne

American, born Canada, 1932

Rockburne is an abstract artist, drawing inspiration primarily from a deep interest in mathematics and astronomy. Born in Montreal, Canada, she moved to the United States in 1950 to attend Black Mountain College, where she studied with mathematician Max Dehn. Dehn became a lifelong influence on her work as she created paintings that expressed mathematical concepts. Her work has been seen in solo exhibitions at numerous galleries and is represented in museum collections, including The Metropolitan Museum of Art and The Museum of Modern Art, in New York City; the High Museum of Art, Atlanta; The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; the National Museum of Women in the Arts, Washington, D.C.; and the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
