Dale Chihuly

American, 1941

  • Chihuly’s smaller works, drawn from sources including sealife, basketry of the Pacific Northwest, and working with glass in Venice, include his Baskets, Seaforms, Cylinders, Macchias, and other series. Chihuly incorporates undulating, ribbed forms, intense colors, and inventive patterns into his works, marking the artist’s explorations into color, line, form, and assemblage techniques. In his large-scale works, Chihuly evokes natural phenomena, such as gardens, waterfalls, coral reefs, and forests, exploring the luminous qualities of his works in both indoor and outdoor environments. His public installations are currently exhibited in Jerusalem, Venice, Chicago, Dubai, New York, Amsterdam, London, Denver, and San Francisco, and in many other cities.

He has received two fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, a Fulbright Fellowship, a Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation Grant, a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Glass Art Society, and a Gold Medal Award from the National Arts Club, among many other honors.
