The Foundation for Art and Preservation in Embassies is profoundly saddened by the death of Alma Powell. She was a dear friend to so many of us at FAPE.
While her husband, Colin Powell, served as our country’s 65th Secretary of State, Alma was a great supporter of our organization, attending events and offering advice and guidance.
Alma understood the importance of sharing American art and culture after traveling the world with Colin while he was in the military.
In 2003, when FAPE commissioned Dorothea Rockburne to create a mural at the new U.S. Embassy in Kingston in honor of Colin and his family who come from Jamaica, Alma was happy to participate.
A lifelong advocate for children’s lives, Alma was pleased when Dorothea was painting the work at the Queens Museum of Art and FAPE partnered with the museum and Studio in a School to engage students using the mural as inspiration.
FAPE is forever grateful for Alma’s friendship. She always made our Annual Events in Washington, D.C., more special and meaningful. She will be greatly missed.
We send our sympathies to Alma’s family, including her children, Michael, Linda and Annemarie, during this difficult time.
