Congratulations to Jo Carole Lauder, FAPE Chairman, and Darren Walker, FAPE Vice President, who were honored last night by President Joseph R. Biden and First Lady Dr. Jill Biden for their service to our nation and their steadfast dedication to the arts! We extend our heartfelt congratulations to Wallis Annenberg, Ken Burns, Alex Katz, Jon Meacham and Carrie Mae Weems, who were recognized as well. We are deeply grateful for their contributions to our program.

On Monday, October 21st, Jo Carole Lauder received the National Medal of Arts. It is the highest award given by the United States government to artists and arts patrons who "are deserving of special recognition by reason of their outstanding contributions to the excellence, growth, support and availability of the arts in the United States."

Jo Carole was recognized for her work with The Museum of Modern Art, FAPE, and the many other cultural institutions she has collaborated with for more than 50 years. She has advocated for artists to be able to share their voices and vision, which reflect our ever-changing society. Jo Carole knows that art highlights commonalities and celebrates differences through a universal language that transcends boundaries and conflict.

Darren Walker was recognized with the National Humanities Medal. The award honors individuals or groups whose work has deepened the nation's understanding of the humanities and broadened our citizens' engagement with history, literature, languages, philosophy and other humanities subjects.

Darren represents the best of humanity and has dedicated his life and career to social justice. He has worked tirelessly in support of the betterment of our global society and has proven that the arts, culture, and humanities not only provide avenues for self-expression and a deeper understanding of our world, but also create spaces for us to collectively confront difficult truths and envision brighter futures.

Both Jo Carole and Darren know that cultural diplomacy initiatives showcase a very real side of who we are as a nation—one that promotes creative expression and enhances the opportunity to engage the world community. They understand that art is another means of diplomacy; one that brings people together.

Whether through an installation at our Embassy in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, jazz musicians, ballet dancers, actors or singers, Jo Carole and Darren’s leadership and dedication to FAPE have promoted our nation’s soft-power diplomacy in every corner of the world. For this, we are eternally grateful.
